Staying at home with one’s children can be an
extremely rewarding, enriching, experience and a
choice that more and more women are making these days.
However, with every pro comes a con and in the case of
the stay at home mother a shortage of cash flow is
certainly an obstacle needing to be overcome. In this
article we will be discussing a few side jobs to
help the ever busy and overwhelmed mommy earn cash
while still being able to be home with her kids…
Number one, ebay baby! Do you buy brands like
Gymboree, Baby Gap, Janie and Jack or other mid-priced
brands for your kids? What do you do with them when
they are outgrown, throw them away? Give them to a
friend? Sell them for fifty cents at a garage sale?
STOP! You’re throwing money away. Take care of your kids
things, treat any stains, wash in cold, line dry
and list them on ebay, there is a huge market for
gently worn children’s clothing and shoes. All you
need is internet access, a digital camera and some
poly mailers. One thing to remember though, start
selling seasonal things early! Like July for back to
school, October for Christmas and January for spring
clothes!
Number two, Paper route! Now I know right now
you’re picturing the beave, riding his Schwinn down
the street, baseball cap turned sideways tossing
papers down neighborhood driveways. Well, fortunately
for you modern comforts have made this job a heck of
alot easier. If you’re willing to get up early, and
give up just a few hours of your morning, you can
easily bring in around $1500 a month. Call your local
paper and ask for the distribution office to get
started!
Number three, start your own day-care to make some cash, Think about
it, you’re already wiping stinky bottoms, passing out
snacks and fishing your brand new mascara out of the
toilet right? Why not take care of a few of your
friends kids too and make a little extra cash on the
side? You’ll need to get a license which can take a
couple of weeks but after that you’re set. Just be
sure and set your hours firmly in the beginning so you
have some time alone with just your family.
Number four, Handy with your camera? Know a little
bit about photoshop? With the economy in a serious
slump these days people just aren’t shelling out money
for extras like they used to. One of the first things
to go, portraits, family portraits, wedding portraits,
special birthday pictures, anniversaries, graduations
all these are great opportunities for someone with a
little skill in the photography department to make
some extra cash. You’ll need a portfolio (a few great
shots in a photo album) some business cards and a few
friends to spread word of your talent around the
neighborhood. A few great sessions, word will spread
like wildfire and you’ll be raking in the dough!
To sum this up, we understand you need a cash job. Supporting a family on one income
is a challenge not for the faint of heart, it takes
careful planning, living on a budget, and for those
extras the kids want, a wee bit of resourcefulness,
but as the adage says “where there’s a will there’s a
way” and most likely one day you’ll look back and be
glad you got to be the one to kiss the scrapes, bake
the cookies, see the first steps, and of course, fish
your own mascara out of the toilet.
